The Maypole family lives at the edge of the ocean, off the grid and a tribe unto themselves in the low country of South Carolina on an unnamed island. They make do with next to nothing and the brothers, self styled pirates, board and steal from the unsuspecting tourist's luxury yachts. But on one of these trips they include their little sister, Dew, who falls into the ocean and drowns.
"There were two gods that evening and they partitioned their reign over that channel equally. The sun in full retreat over the ocean to the right, and the moon rising over the tree line to their left. And yet it turns out what they would really need, come nightfall was a third and merciful god, a god of redemption and salvation...Unfortunately that god was too busy."
In this brilliant first novel, Hammes captures the culture of those who live, by choice or by custom at the ends of civilization. A consummate storyteller with a gift for luminous description, Hammes weaves a tale of magical beings conjured up by tales of the Gullah Geechee people who live just over the bay, but worlds away.
