Ever heard about the Resurrection men?
Stealing corpses for medical research was a underhand business in Victorian England as doctors were prohibited by law from using the dead for educational purposes.
In this novel by Jess Kidd, our female detective, Bridie Devine, was raised in the sewage strewn streets of London by a body their and then sold for a guinea to a doctor.
As a child of unflinching courage, she serves as the doctor's assistant until she leaves his house under duress.
Fast forward. Bridie, forbidden to study medicine, has become a detective and she is asked to locate a kidnapped child who has been hidden away for unknown reasons for her entire life.
Although a little wordy at times, the plot and characters will keep you reading into the night. And the curiosities of the times keep multiplying.
